Remagen's bridge was built during World War I to aid the movement of troops and supplies to the Western Front. On March 7, 1945, an advance regiment of the US Armoured Division reached this point, to find that the bridge - unlike all the others along the Rhine, Germany's most crucial natural defensive barrier - was still intact.
