Until it was devastated in two massive air raids in 1944, Frankfurt had the largest and most complete Altstadt of any important German city. After the war, the most important monuments were carefully restored; other parts were hastily rebuilt in a modern manner. Even so, large gaps remained until the 1970s, when, after much debate, they were filled with a mixture of pastiche medieval buildings and ultra-modern public commissions
