Closest to the Hauptbahnhof, the first of the three island quarters is the Neustadt or New Town. It's new only in a relative sense, having been founded as the commercial quarter at the end of the twelfth century, a generation after the previously Slav Altstadt had been re-established as a German town. Despite conspicuous gaps left by the war, its narrow streets retain much of their old feel. The first building in view is the cylindrical Steintor (Tues-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5pm; DM4/?2), one of four surviving gateways out of the ten that the two settlements once possessed. There's a small museum inside showing special exhibitions on the city's history. Northeast of here is the Paulikloster , a thirteenth-century Dominican friary left in ruins during World War II, though some reconstruction work has been carried out since the Wende .
Right in the middle of the island is the Neustadtischer Markt, now returned to its age-old role as a market square. It's dominated by the Katharinenkirche , a Gothic pile from the turn of
the fifteenth century. Outside, the walls are crammed with spouting gargoyles and frilly gables tacked on for purely decorative effect, with the varied colouring and positioning of the bricks helping to transform the surface effects yet further. The fantastical interior design tends to overshadow the church's treasures, which include a finely carved fifteenth-century altar and a fourteenth-century stained-glass window in the choir which was fortuitously removed from the Paulikloster in 1942.
