Hauptstrasse runs northwestwards over the Havel into the Altstadt , which occupies only a small portion of a much larger island. Immediately over the river is the Johanniskirche , another brick Gothic church still remaining in the burnt-out state it was left in at the end of the war. Further along, at Hauptstr. 96, is the Freyhaus (Tues-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5pm; DM4/?2, free first Sun of month), a Baroque mansion which now houses the district museum. This array of local ephemera is more interesting than you might expect, particularly the displays on the archeology of the Havelland, the graphic art section and a fascinating toy collection.

At the end of Ritterstrasse, the continuation of Hauptstrasse, Plauer Strasse leads north to the Altstadtischer Markt, over which looms the fourteenth-century Altstadtisches Rathaus , whose facade is topped with an unusual stepped gable. In front of it stands a mighty five-metre-high statue of Roland , medieval symbol of Brandenburg's status as a market town. He previously stood guard in front of the Neustadtisches Rathaus opposite the Katharinenkirche, but was brought here after its destruction in World War II.

Continuing

northwards, you come to the parish church of the Altstadt, the Gotthardtkirche . Its facade is in the austere Romanesque style of the Premonstratensian monks, but behind it stands a light and airy Gothic hall church erected in the fifteenth century. Inside, look out for the thirteenth-century font and the lovely Burgundian tapestry showing the hunting of the unicorn. On the square facing the church is the Schulhaus , a half-timbered former school building from the sixteenth century.
