FUSSEN , the southern terminus of the Romantic Road, lies in a beautiful setting close to the Austrian border between the Forggensee reservoir and the Ammer mountains. Although used by most visitors merely as a jumping-off point for the two royal castles situated some 4km to the southeast, it's of far more than passing interest. Dominating the Lech valley from a position high above the Altstadt is the Hohes Schloss , which assumed its present late Gothic appearance at the turn of the sixteenth century, when the old fortress was rebuilt as a summer residence of the Augsburg prince-bishops. In an ingenious cost-saving device, the inner courtyard is adorned with illusionistic paintings showing elaborate door and window frames and oriels. Part of the north wing houses a branch of the Bayerische Staatsgalerie (April-Oct Tues-Sun 11am-4pm; Nov-March Tues-Sun 2-4pm; DM4/?2). Paintings by fifteenth- and sixteenth-century south German masters and members of the nineteenth-century Munich School are on view, but the chief attraction is the Rittersaal , which has a magnificent coffered vault.

Below the Schloss is the former Kloster St Mang , named in honour of the eighth-century "Apostle of the Allgau". The present complex is almost entirely Baroque, but below the church, nowadays designated the Stadtpfarrkirche , is a Carolingian crypt containing the grave of the saint. This is only accessible on Sunday mornings, or by occasional guided tours, the times for which are posted in the porch. The monastic buildings house the Museum der Stadt Fussen (April-Oct Tues-Sun 11am-4pm; Nov-March Tues-Sun 2-4pm; DM5/?2.50), though

the exhibits are overshadowed by the splendid Baroque interiors themselves, including the sumptuous Festsaal , which is still regularly used for concerts; the domed colloquium; and the oval refectory, which has an aperture in its ceiling looking up into the library above. Also of special note is the Annakapelle , the original monastic church, which was converted to serve as a funerary chapel and has a remarkable early seventeenth-century mural of The Dance of Death .
