The parallel north-south valleys of the Aspe and Ossau are the central Pyrenees at their most sauvage , and the region in which the Pyrenean brown bear most tenaciously resists extinction. About six survive on the slopes of the valleys, in the Cirque de Lescun and in the adjoining parts of Spain. Tourism is less developed here, especially in the Aspe valley, because unreliable snow conditions have precluded ski-resort construction - but what tourism has failed to do, a major road-building scheme threatens to achieve . To see the best of the region you should get out your map and walk perpendicular to the line of the valleys, using the handful of refuges or camping in permitted areas along the way.
