M° Eglise d'Auteuil . The Eglise d'Auteuil metro station makes a good starting point for exploring Auteuil. Around this area are several of Hector Guimard's Art Nouveau buildings: at 8 avenue de la Villa-de-la-Reunion, 41 rue Chardon-Lagache, 142 avenue de Versailles, 39 boulevard Exelmans and 34 rue Boileau. This last was one of Guimard's first commissions, in 1891. A high fence, creepers and a huge satellite dish obscure much of the view, but you can see some of the decorative tile-work under the eaves and around the doors and windows. At the end of rue Boileau, beyond boulevard Exelmans, you'll find a series of charming villas backing onto the Auteuil cemetery. For more of the life of the quartier, follow the old village high street, rue d'Auteuil , west from the metro exit to place Lorrain , which hosts a Saturday market. In rue Poussin, just off the place , carriage gates open onto Villa Montmorency , a typical 16e villa , with leafy lanes and English-style gardens. Former residents include the writer Andre Gide and the Goncourt brothers of Prix Goncourt fame.
