West of the Butte lies the Montmartre cemetery . Tucked down below street level in the hollow of an old quarry, it's a tangle of trees and funerary pomposity, more intimate and less melancholy than Pere-Lachaise or Montparnasse. The illustrious dead at rest here include Zola, Stendhal, Berlioz, Degas, Feydeau, Offenbach, Dalida, Nijinsky and Francois Truffaut. There's also a large Jewish section by the east wall. The entrance is on avenue Rachel under rue Caulaincourt, next to an antique cast-iron poor-box ( Tronc pour les Pauvres ).
