The Musee Cognacq-Jay houses art works collected by the family who built up the Samaritaine department store - you can see a history of the family and their charitable works in a series of dioramas on the tenth-floor terrace of the store. As well as being noted philanthropists, the Cognacq-Jays were lovers of European art. Their collection of eighteenth-century pieces on show includes works by Canaletto, Fragonard, Greuze, Tiepolo and Rembrandt, displayed in beautifully carved wood- panelled rooms.
