Mº Chatelet & RER Chatelet-les-Halles . The streets on the eastern side of Les Halles have plenty of cafes where you can take a break from the shoving crowds, and are traversed by the long Rue St-Denis , which has been the red-light district of Paris for centuries. Attempts by the local mairie to rid the street of its pimps and prostitutes have been to no avail; despite the fact that the area between rues Etienne-Marcel and Reaumur has been pedestrianized to stop kerb-crawling and cafes like the English Frog and Rosbif have been encouraged to set up among the porn outlets, weary women still wait in doorways between peepshows, striptease joints and sex-video shops. The area south of here towards place du Chatelet teems with jazz bars, nightclubs and restaurants, and is far more crowded at 2am than 2pm.
