Five minutes' walk down the drive from the chateau of Chantilly, stands a colossal stable block, now transformed into a horse museum, the Musee Vivant du Cheval . The building was erected at the beginning of the eighteenth century by the incumbent Conde prince, who believed he would be reincarnated as a horse and wished to provide fitting accommodation for his future relatives. In the main hall, horses of different breeds from around the world are stalled, with a ring for demonstrations (April-Oct 11.30am, 3.30pm & 5.15pm; Nov-March weekends & public hols 11.30am, 3.30pm & 5.15pm, weekdays 3.30pm only). Beyond the hall, a series of life-size models illustrates the various activities horses are used for. In the rooms off the hall are collections of paintings, horseshoes, veterinary equipment, bridles and saddles, a mock-up of a blacksmith's, children's horse toys (including a chain-driven number, with handles in its ears, which belonged to Napoleon III), and a fanciful Sicilian cart painted with scenes of Crusader battles.
