Around Arras , 35km northwest of Cambrai, and Albert , 40km to the southwest of Cambrai, some of the fiercest and most futile battles of World War I took place, and at one time the trenches even cut through the grandiose main square in Arras, now restored to its former glory. At nearby Vimy Ridge , the Canadians fell in their thousands; at Notre-Dame de Lorette , the French suffered the same fate. Albert is not a place to linger, but makes a convenient base for exploring the many war cemeteries in the area.
