Understandably, most tourists travel non-stop through the Pas-de-Calais - France's northernmost departement - en route to warmer climes and more varied scenery. However, if you're on a short break to one of the Channel ports, it's worth making the effort to venture inland; Cassel in particular is a minor gem.
