The rolling hills and green twisting valleys of the Pays d'Auge , which stretches south of the cathedral town of Lisieux , are scattered with magnificent half-timbered manor houses. The pastures here are the lushest in the province, their produce the world-famous cheeses of Camembert, Livarot and Pont L'Eveque. And beside them are hectares of orchards, yielding the best of Norman ciders, both apple and pear ( poire ), as well as Calvados apple brandy. Though the tourist authorities responsible for the Pays d'Auge have laid out a Route du Fromage and a Route du Cidre , you won't be missing out if you don't follow these itineraries. For really good solid Norman cooking this is the perfect area to look out for fermes auberges , working farms which welcome paying visitors to share their meals. Local tourist offices can provide copious lists of these and of local producers from whom you can buy your cheese and booze.
