Until Brittany Ferries inaugurated its direct services to Brittany, the Cotentin Peninsula , in the far west of Normandy hard against the frontier with Brittany, provided many visitors with their first taste of western France. Now that Caen, too, has direct sailings, the port of Cherbourg sees only a fraction of the traffic it had twenty years ago, but the peninsula itself remains worth exploring.
