As you head west along the coast of Basse Normandie from Le Havre, a succession of somewhat smug and exclusive resorts - of which only Honfleur is especially memorable - is followed first by the beaches where the Allied armies landed in 1944, and then by the wilder, and in some places deserted, shore around the Cotentin Peninsula . There are two absolutely unmissable sights - the glorious island abbey of Mont St-Michel and the Bayeux Tapestry .
