A particularly beautiful and out-of-the-way stretch of country lies on the southwestern periphery of the Massif Central, bordered roughly by the valley of the River Lot in the north and the Viaur in the south. The upland areas are open and wide, with views east to the mountains of the Cevennes and south to the Monts de Lacaune and the Monts de l'Espinouse. Rodez , capital of the Rouergue, with a fine cathedral, is the only place of any size, accessible on the main train and bus routes. But the most dramatic places are in the river valleys, in particular the great abbey of Conques and the small towns of Entraygues and Estaing .
