Six kilometres south of Azay-le-Rideau is the troglodyte village of VILLAINES-LES-ROCHERS , famous for its wickerwork co-operative, set up in 1849 by the local curate to keep the village economically sustainable; you can still visit the Musee de l'Osier et de la Vannerie (mid-May to Sept daily 2.30-6.30pm; free). Villaines still produces a third of all wickerwork articles in France: you can visit the workshops that are dug into the rock, providing perfect humid conditions for keeping the willow supple, and buy baskets, chairs and so forth from the Maison d'Exposition of the Societe Cooperative Agricole de Vannerie, 1 rue de la Cheneillere (tel 02.47.45.43.03).
