NOHANT , about 10km north of La Chatre on the main Chateauroux road, is where Sand, or Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin as she was born, spent half her life. The Chateau de Nohant - not really a chateau but her very pleasant eighteenth-century country house - is open for quick guided tours (daily: July & Aug 9am-6.30pm; mid-Oct to Jan 2.30-3.30pm; rest of year 9-11.15am & 2-5.30pm; 35F/?3.34). You're shown the dining-room table where Flaubert, Turgenev, Dumas, Delacroix, Balzac and Liszt all dined on many occasions. The piano that George Sand gave Chopin, her guest for ten years, sits in the living room surrounded by the family portraits. There's also the puppet theatre made by Chopin and Sand's son Maurice, the pair no doubt trying to outdo each other in their well-documented rivalry for Sand's attentions. Chopin's music is honoured in a week-long piano festival , Chopin chez George Sand, at Nohant and La Chatre towards the end of July. Tickets range from 30F/?4.57 to 200F/?30.49; bookings and programme details are available from La Chatre's tourist office .
