Although the Berry countryside is on the whole rather dismal, the upper valley of the Indre has some attractions. Nohant and La Chatre were home to George Sand and Chopin for some time, while the small village of St-Chartier , 9km north of La Chatre, is worth a visit for its huge folk festival around July 14. The main draw along this stretch, however, is Loches , with its magnificent medieval citadel.
