Eating and Drinking
There are several cheap eating places around place St-Pierre: Auberge St-Pierre , 6 place St-Pierre (tel 02.41.51.26.25; closed Mon out of season), has good 55F/?8.38 and 75F/?11.43 menus ; opposite, at no. 1, Les Forges de St-Pierre (tel 02.41.38.21.79; closed Sun & Tues evening & Oct) specializes in grilled meat, with an acceptable 75F/?11.43 menu; and La Quichenotte , 2 rue Haute-St-Pierre (tel 02.41.51.31.98; closed Mon & Jan), serves good crepes at 55F/?8.38. You can also eat in the chateau grounds at L'Orangerie (tel 02.41.67.12.88; closed Sun evening & Mon out of season), a restaurant and salon de the , with a 90F/?13.72 menu. There are a couple of good bars on place St-Pierre: Le Swing , with its ancient Wurlitzer jukebox and fruit cocktails, and Le Richelieu , with good music, Guinness and pool. The Cafe de la Poste , opposite the post office on place du Petit-Thouars, is a student meeting place that serves cheap snacks and stays open till 2am. The hotel bar of Le Cristal is also popular, along with the other bars along the riverfront on place de la Republique.
