Halfway between Menestreau-en-Villette and Marcilly-en-Villette and 6km east of La Ferte-St-Aubin, just off the D108, is the little hamlet of CIRAN . Its tiny chateau has a Musee de la Vie Traditionelle , with photos showing such delights as dogs being used to pull carts, among other local revelations (daily 10am-noon & 2-5.30/6pm; winter closed Tues; 20F/?3.05). But the main reason to come here is to explore the 300 hectares of the Domaine de Ciran and see its working farm, a typical Sologne set up where the principal activities are deer breeding, keeping goats and making chevre , as well as growing acres of asparagus. You may well catch a glimpse of wild deer in the forested parts of the domaine , herons and geese around the ponds and sometimes even coypus. It's also possible to come across wild boar, so be careful, though they are not very threatening unless they're with their babies. The 6km signed walk - for which waterproof footwear is advisable - gives you an excellent taste of the different landscapes of the Sologne.
