Twelve kilometres northeast of Gien is another chateau dedicated to catching your own supper - this time by fishing. The Chateau des Pecheurs at LA BUSSIERE is parked like a yacht on its lake, connected to a formal arrangement on its mainland of gardens and huge outbuildings (April to mid-Nov daily except Tues 10am-noon & 2-6pm; July & Aug also open Tues; 35F/5.33). Initially a fortress, the chateau was turned into a luxurious residence at the end of the sixteenth century, but only the gateway and one pepperpot tower are recognizably medieval. Inside, tanks of freshwater fish and a coelacanth, one of the oldest fishes known, with paddle-like fins and a world-weary expression, are the key exhibits, but the seventeenth-century kitchens and old laundry are also quite fun.
