Arrival, Information and Accommodation
The gare SNCF lies to the east of the town, from where rue du Dr-P.-Labussiere and rue du 11-Novembre lead to the gare routiere on place Jeanne-d'Arc, where Joan is sculptured in mid-battle charge. Keep heading west, either along the river bank or across place Mirabeau into rue Rabelais, and you'll soon reach the medieval quarter. The tourist office is at 12 rue Voltaire (daily 10am-noon & 2-5.30pm; tel 02.47.93.17.85, fax 02.47.93.93.05, www.chinon.com ), below the eastern end of the castle. The two cheapest hotels in town are the Point du Jour , 102 quai Jeanne-d'Arc (tel 02.47.93.07.20; under 160F/?24-220F/?34), and the Jeanne d'Arc , 11 rue Voltaire (tel 02.47.93.02.85; under 160F/?24), though the Diderot , in a grand eighteenth-century house east of the church of St Mexme at 7 rue Diderot (tel 02.47.93.18.87, fax 02.47.93.37.10; 300-400F/?46-61), is a more comfortable option. Dorm rooms and bikes for rent are available at the Location de Velos, close to the train station on rue Descartes (tel 02.47.93.04.37); turn left out of the station onto avenue Gambetta, and first right into rue Descartes. The campsite , Camping de l'Ile Auger (tel 02.47.93.08.35; mid-March to Oct), overlooks the old town and chateau from the south bank of the Vienne; turn right from the bridge along quai Danton.
