Twenty kilometres north of Loches and southeast of Tours, spanning the slow-moving River Cher , the Chateau de Chenonceau is perhaps the best of all the Loire chateaux for architecture, site, contents, organization and atmosphere. Further upstream Montrichard and St-Aignan make nice diversions from the endless stream of castle tours, while for still-unsatiated chateau buffs, there's Valencay further south between the Cher and the Indre.
