On the south bank of the river, within a twenty-kilometre radius south and east of Blois, are a handful of impressive and easily visited chateaux (information online at www.loiredeschateaux.com ). By car you could call at all of them in a couple of days, but they also make ideal cycling or walking targets if you arm yourself with a map and strike out along minor roads and woodland rides. Of the two most imposing examples, Chaumont has frequent daily trains from Blois (Onzain gare SNCF on the other side of the river), but Chambord is reachable by public transport only on the expensive chateaux tour buses that leave from Blois, Tours or Amboise - it does, however, make a flat, beautiful cycle ride from Blois. The cheapest tour bus trips leave Blois from the gare SNCF (mid-June to mid-Sept), with two itineraries: Chaumont-Chenonceau-Amboise (110F/?16.77) and Chambord-Cheverny (65F/?9.91); tickets are available from the tourist office in Blois, and prices are exclusive of entry fee.
