On the face of it the Languedoc coast isn't particularly enticing, the beaches bleak and treeless strands, often irritatingly windswept and cut off from their hinterland by marshy etangs (lagoons). But the area does have long hours of sunshine, 200km of sand still only sporadically populated and relatively unpolluted water. In the last decade resort towns - mostly geared towards families who settle in for a few weeks at a time - have sprung up, sometimes engulfing once quiet fishing towns. But there's still enough unexploited territory to make this coast a good getaway from the crowds, and many of the old towns which still depend on fishing have managed to sustain their character and traditions despite the summer onslaught.
