Perigord Pourpre

The departement of Perigord Pourpre takes its name from the wine-growing region concentrated in its southwest corner, most famous for the sweet white wines produced around Monbazillac . The only town of any size is Bergerac , which makes a good base for visiting the Roman remains at Montcaret and the nearby Chateau de Montaigne , home of the famous sixteenth-century philosopher.
