Practicalities
If you're arriving in Sartene by bus , you'll be dropped either at the top of avenue Gabriel-Peri or at the end of cours General-de-Gaulle. On the opposite side of place Porta, a short way down rue Capitaine-Benedetti, is a tiny tourist office (May-Sept Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 3-7pm; tel 04.95.77.15.40). The only hotel in Sartene itself is Les Roches on rue Jean-Jaures, a large family-run place just below the old town (tel 04.95.77.07.61, fax 04.95.77.19.93; 300-400F/?46-61); it commands panoramic views of the Vallee du Rizzanese and has a restaurant that serves hearty Corsican food. Otherwise try the Villa Piana , 1km out of town on the Propriano road (tel 04.95.77.07.04, fax 04.95.73.45.65; 400-500F/?61-76; closed Nov to mid-April), an upmarket place, with a pool and tennis court, overlooking the Golfe de Valinco - or simply stay in Propriano , which has a wider choice of accommodation. The nearest campsite , Camping Olva ( Les Eucalyptus ), lies 5km along the D69 to Castagna (tel 04.95.77.11.58; closed Nov-April) - it offers a free bus service to and from Sartene. As for restaurants , try the cheap and cheerful aux Gourmets (tel 04.95.77.16.08), on the cours S?ur-Amelie, whose good-value 80F/?12.16 set menu includes wild-boar steak and chips. For a light lunch, you can't do better than the Zia Paulina , tucked away at the end of an atmospheric alleyway, rue des Freres-Bartoli, in the vielle ville : Corsican specialities dominate their set menus and there's a generous selection of local wines to choose from. Pizza Porta , on the square, is a good choice for quick snacks such as toasted sandwiches, fresh salads, crepes and pizzas. Cafes cluster around place Porta, and are great places for crowd-watching.
