Arrival and Information
Bastia's Poretta airport is 16km south of town off the Route Nationale (tel 04.95.54.54.54). Shuttle buses into the centre coincide with flights, dropping passengers opposite the train station for a fare of 50F/?7.60 (the journey takes thirty minutes); taxis charge around 200F/?30.40. Ferries arrive at the Nouveau Port, just a five-minute walk from the centre of town; the SNCM office is at 15 bd de Gaulle (tel 04.95.54.66.88). Bastia doesn't have a proper bus station , which can cause confusion, with services arriving and departing from different locations around the north side of the main square. Buses from Ajaccio, Bonifacio, Porto-Vecchio and the east coast stop outside the travel agents opposite the post office (PTT) on avenue Marechal-Sebastiani, whereas those coming from Calvi pull in outside the train station. Local suburban services, and those from St-Florent and Cap Corse, work out of a small square on the north side of avenue Marechal-Sebastiani - which, confusingly, is referred to as the gare routiere , even though it's little more than a lay-by. A summary of bus times and departure points is available at the tourist office , at the north end of place St-Nicolas (June to mid-Sept daily 8am-8pm; mid-Sept to May Mon-Sat 8am-6pm, Sun & holidays 9am-1pm; tel 04.95.31.81.34). You can access the Internet at Gigatec , 8 rue Fontaine-Neuve, just above the Vieux Port, one of Corsica's few Internet cafes (Mon-Sat 10am-8pm; minimum 40F/?6.08 for the first hour, and 20F/?3 per hour thereafter). You can rent cars from Avis/Ollandini, 40 bd Paoli (tel 04.95.32.57.30), or at the airport (tel 04.95.54.55.46); and Europcar, 1 rue du Nouveau Port (tel 04.95.31.50.91), or at the airport (tel 04.95.30.09.50). Bikes can be rented from Locacycles, behind the Palais de Justice (tel 04.95.32.30.64), and scooters and motorcycles from Plaisance Service Location, in the marina (tel 04.95.31.49.01). Luggage may be left at the Nouveau Port's gare maritime (daily 8-11.30am & 2-7.30pm; 15F/?2.28 per item per day); there's another consigne at the train station, but it's a lot more expensive.
