From Migennes near Joigny on the N6, the River Armancon, in tandem with the Canal de Bourgogne , branches off to the north of the River Yonne. Along or close to its valley are several places of real interest: the Renaissance chateaux of Ancy-le-Franc and Tanlay , the eighteenth-century ironworks and Fontenay monastery near Montbard and the site of Julius Caesar's victory over the Gauls at Alesia . It is a route which is particularly worthwhile if you don't have your own transport, for all these places are served by trains on the Dijon-Migennes line (with connections to Sens and Auxerre).
