Thanks to the complex patterning, the stone of the roof on Gavrinis has been identified as part of the same piece as the dolmen known as the Table des Marchands at LOCMARIAQUER , 12km east of Carnac. Locmariaquer also has the Grand Menhir Brise , supposedly the crucial central point of the megalithic observatory of Carnac. Before being floored by an earthquake in 1722, it was by far the largest known menhir - 22m high and weighing more than a full jumbo jet at 347 tonnes. It now lies on the ground in four pieces, with a possible fifth missing, close to the Table des Marchands (daily: mid-Jan to March & Oct to mid-Dec 2-5pm; April & May 10am-1pm & 2-6pm; June-Sept 10am-7pm; July & Aug 32F/?4.88, rest of year 25F/?3.81). There are a couple of reasonable small hotels in Locmariaquer, both with good restaurants: L'Escale (tel 02.97.57.32.51; 220-300F/?34-46; closed Oct-March), is right on the waterfront, with a great view from its terrace, while the Lautram is set slightly back from the sea, facing the church (tel 02.97.57.31.32; 160-220F/?24-34; closed Oct-March). Campsites include the excellent two-star La Ferme Fleurie (tel 02.97.57.34.06; closed Dec & Jan), 1km towards Kerinis, and the two-star, summer-only Lann Brick (tel 02.97.57.32.79; closed mid-Sept to May), 1.5km further on, nearer the beach.
