Brittany's southern coast takes in the province's - and indeed Europe's - most famous prehistoric site, the alignments of Carnac , with the associated megaliths of the beautiful, island-studded Golfe de Morbihan . The beaches are not as spectacular as in Finistere, but there are more safe places to swim and the water is warmer. Of the cities, Lorient has Brittany's most compelling festival and Vannes has one of the liveliest medieval town centres. Further east, La Baule does a good impression of a Breton St-Tropez, and you can escape to the islands of Belle-Ile, Hoedic and Houat . Inevitably it's popular, and in summer you can be hard pressed to find a room, but if you're prepared to make reservations, or you're camping, there shouldn't be much problem.
