As late as the 1920s, steamers would make their way across the Rade de Brest and down the Aulne River to Chateaulin , the first real town on the canal route. If you're walking the canal seriously, Pont-Coblant and Pleyben are just 10km further away on the map, but be warned that the meanders make it a several-hour hike. Pick your side of the water, too; there are no bridges between Chateaulin and Pont-Coblant.
