Eating, Drinking and Entertainment
There are plenty of lively and inexpensive restaurants, cafes and bars by the river near place Battant, particularly along the little streets running parallel to the river. Brasserie du Commerce , 31 rue des Granges, has rather grand decor and ambience, and Brasserie du Palais Granvelle , in a lovely shady park next door to the Palais Granvelle, is the best place for breakfast and coffee hits. Two good places for a substantial meal are the century-old Restaurant au Petit Polonais , 81 rue des Granges (tel 03.81.81.23.67; closed Sat evening & Sun; menus from 64F/?9.76), which serves regional food, and, for lunch, the superb Le Cafe-Cafe , 5bis rue Luc Breton (tel 03.81.81.15.24; Mon-Sat lunch only; plats from 59F/?8.99). The two biggest cultural events of the year in Besancon are Jazz en Franche-Comte , which takes place in June and July, and an international young conductors' competition in the first two weeks of September.
