The southern Vosges cover a much greater area than the northern range, stretching as far south as Belfort in Franche-Comte. The major tourist attractions are along the Route du Vin , which follows the foot of the mountains along the western edge of the wide flat valley of the Rhine; every turn in the road reveals yet another exquisitely preserved medieval village. Many of these, such as Colmar , the main centre for the route, suffer from an overdose of visitors. To escape from the crowds, you'll need to head for the hills proper, along the Route des Cretes , which traces the central ridge of the Vosges to the west.
