The Vercors Massif and Chartreuse Massif are very close to Grenoble, particularly the Vercors, which stretches out to the southwest, parallel to the River Drac on the west side of the N75. Chartreuse is northwest of the city,
running up the west bank of the River Isere towards Chambery.
Both ranges are relatively gentle and not too high, so if you're starting your Alpine ventures here, you can use them to break your feet in. The Grenoble CIMES office publishes route descriptions. Neither massif is heavily populated, and the lack of industry makes them authentic and unspoilt Alpine destinations, popular with all types of energetic outdoor enthusiasts from cavers to mountain bikers.
