The Parc National des Ecrins covers 93,000 hectares (230,000 acres) of Alpine terrain, some

50km southeast of Grenoble and 20km west of Briancon, its highest peaks rising to around 4100m in the Massif de Pelvoux in the north of the park. The easiest route into the park is from Argentieres-la-Bessee, a scruffy, depressed little place, 16km south of Briancon. From here a small road cuts west into the valley towards Vallouise, with the ice-capped monster of Mont Pelvoux itself (3946m) rearing in front of you all the way. It's terrain for serious climbers and walkers.
