The drive across country by the back roads from Samoens to Evian takes you through some lovely scenery. If you are tempted to stay longer, ABONDANCE , in the middle of the Chablais region, is the place to make for. Remote and beautiful, it is renowned for its abbey and cloisters. There is a gite d'etape here (tel 04.50.73.12.93) and several hotels , the best of which are La Rocaille (tel 04.50.73.01.74, fax 04.50.73.07.10; 160-220F/?24-34) and the Hotel L'Abbaye (tel 04.50.73.02.03, fax 04.50.81.60.46; 220-300F/?34-46).
