The first major settlement on the route, LE BOURG-D'OISANS , 20km southeast of Grenoble, is of no great interest in itself, but it's a good place to catch your breath. You can pick up information from the tourist office , on quai Girard, by the river in the middle of town (July & Aug 9am-7pm; rest of year Mon-Sat 9am-noon & 2-7pm; tel 04.76.80.03.25, www.oisans.com ) and the park information centre on avenue Gambetta (July & Aug 9am-noon & 2-7pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 9am-noon & 2-7pm; tel 04.76.80.00.51). There are some good-value hotels here, among them L'Oberland , on avenue du Gare (tel 04.76.80.24.24, fax 04.76.80.14.48, www.oisans.com/hotel.oberland ; 220-300F/?34-46), the Hotel des Alpes on the main road (tel 04.76.80.00.16, fax 04.76.79.15.13; 220-300F/?34-46; restaurant from 68F/?10.37) and the Hotel Le Florentin on rue Thiers (tel 04.76.80.01.61, fax 04.76.80.05.49, www.le-florentin.com ; 220-300F/?34-46; restaurant from 98F/?14.95). Campers are well catered for, with a municipal campsite on rue Humbert near the town centre and a concentration of sites across the river on the Alpe d'Huez road. The restaurant Le Glandon , specializing in grilled meats, also has rooms (tel & fax 04.76.80.18.36; 220-300F/?34-46). If you like the idea of cycling in sharp mountain air, bikes can be rented from Cycles d'Oisans on rue Viennois - not such a crazy undertaking as you might think, for if you keep to the valley bottoms the gradients aren't too fearsome.
