The first major settlement on the route, LE BOURG-D'OISANS , 20km southeast of Grenoble, is of no great interest in itself, but it's a good place to catch your breath. Campers are well catered for, with a municipal

campsite on rue Humbert near the town centre and a concentration of sites across the river on the Alpe d'Huez road. If you like the idea of cycling in sharp mountain air, bikes can be rented from Cycles d'Oisans on rue Viennois - not such a crazy undertaking as you might think, for if you keep to the valley bottoms the gradients aren't too fearsome.
