Eating and Drinking
For high-quality dining , head for Atmosphere , 123 place Balmat (tel 04.50.55.97.97), offering elaborate dishes in a cosy setting for less than 150F/?22.88, or Le Panier des Quatre Saisons (tel 04.50.53.98.77), which lacks atmosphere but serves up tasty affordable meals starting at 75F/?11.44. For a cheap meal, take advantage of hostel canteens where you can, or try La Poele , 79 av de l'Aiguille-du-Midi, which specializes in omelettes (60-70F/?9.15-10.68), though it tends to become very crowded. Other possibilities are La Belouga , 56 rue Paccard, serving hearty sandwiches and paninis , and Bistrot des Sports , in rue Joseph-Vallot, a nice cafe with simple plats . Rue Joseph-Vallot has plenty of gourmet food shops with local cheeses and other Alpine delicacies. If you are after a drink , it's worth taking a look at Le Choucas , rue Paccard, right in the centre of town, or the Wild Wallabies bar in rue de la Tour, with pool tables, swimming pool, and Australian beers (summer 11.30am-2am; winter 4pm-2am).
