While Annecy's high-season crowds may be bearable for only a day or two, the town's hinterland offers a number of agreeable ways to stretch your eyes and legs. In addition to boat tours , cycling is an enjoyable means of appreciating Lac Annecy. The forty-kilometre road circuit of the lake is a very popular Sunday morning activity among sporty Anneciens and a traffic-free cycle route follows the west bank of the lake. The surrounding hills offer walking and mountain-biking excursions (as well as more specialized pursuits) to suit all. The ascent of La Tournette (2351m) is one of the less demanding walks to be found in the forested Semnoz mountains on the lake's west side. Ten kilometres west of Annecy, the Gorges du Fier and nearby Chateau Montrottier combine both natural and historical spectacle within a short distance of each other; and, if you're leaving Annecy to the north, the Ponts de la Caille are also worthy of a passing inspection.
