On the western outskirts of Tallinn is the Open-Air Museum (Vabaohumuuseum; daily: May-Aug 10am-8pm; Sept 10am-6pm; Oct 10am-5pm; Nov-April 10am-4pm; 30EEK), a collection of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century village buildings gathered here from different parts of the country. The exhibits illustrate how Estonian farms developed, from all-timber structures with humans and animals living cheek by jowl, to more sophisticated stone buildings. The museum also includes an appealing wooden church and a windmill, though for many visitors the biggest attraction is the Kolu Korts cafe which serves up traditional bean soup and beer. The museum site slopes down to the sea and is known by the Italian name Rocca al Mare (Rock by the Sea), having been thus christened by a merchant who built himself a mansion here during the late nineteenth century. Get there by bus #21 from the train station or trolleybus #6 from Vabaduse valjak.
