The heart of Tallinn and location of most of its sights is the Old Town (Vanalinn), once enclosed by the city's medieval walls. At its centre is the Town Hall Square , the medieval marketplace, above which looms Toompea , the hilltop stronghold of the German Knights who controlled the city during the Middle Ages. There's little to do or see in the streets outside the Old Town, and Tallinn's remaining attractions are located in outlying districts.
