Drink
Estonians are enthusiastic drinkers with beer ( olu ) being the most popular tipple. The principal local brands are Saku and A. Le Coq , both of which are rather tame light lager-style brews, although both companies also produce stronger, Guinness-like porters. The strongest beers are found on the islands - Saaremaa olu is the best known. In bars a lot of people favour vodka ( viin ) with mixers which, thanks to generous measures, is a more cost-effective route to oblivion. Local alcoholic specialities include hoogvein (mulled wine) and Vana Tallinn , a pungent dark liqueur which some suicidal souls mix with vodka. An ever-increasing range of pubs and bars - most of which imitate Irish or American models - are beginning to take over the Estonian drinking scene, especially in Tallinn and other major centres. If you're not boozing, head for a kohvik (cafe), where, although alcohol is usually served, getting drunk is not a priority. In Estonia coffee ( kohv ) is usually of the filter variety, and tea ( tee ) is served without milk.
