Trains and Buses
Bus tickets can either be bought from the bus station ticket office or direct from the driver. It's best to buy long-distance bus tickets in advance if you're travelling at the height of summer or at weekends, especially to the islands. Opt for an express ( ekspress ) bus if possible to avoid frequent stops. Normally luggage is taken on board - if you have a large bag you may have to pay a nominal fee to have it stowed in the luggage compartment. Buses are also useful for travelling to the other Baltic countries with services linking Tallinn, Vilnius and Riga. Train tickets should also be bought in advance - ticket windows are usually marked piletite muuk : international lines are rahvusvaheline , suburban lines linnalahedane . Long-distance services are divided into the following categories: reisirong (passenger) and kiir (fast). Both are slow but the latter, usually requiring a reservation, won't stop at every second village. Both train and bus information is available from station timetable boards - the Estonian for departure is valjub , and arrival is saabub . A Baltic Explorer rail pass gives you unlimited travel throughout Estonia and other Baltic Republics; it's available to ISIC-card holders, under-26s, and ITIC-card holders and their accompanying spouses. For further information on the latest conditions of use and prices contact the RailEurope or Usit CAMPUS branches before leaving home.
