Exploring the rest of Saaremaa is one way of getting acquainted with the unspoilt Estonian countryside. The places described below are all within easy reach of Kuressaare - if you want to explore further afield the island tourist office has information about more far-flung attractions and on how best to get around Saaremaa by public transport. Thanks to its largely flat terrain, though, exploring the island by bike is also a viable option. KAARMA , just over 10km north of Kuressaare, is a small village that's the centre of the local dolomite-mining industry. More interestingly, it's also the location of the thirteenth-century Kaarma kirik , a large, red-roofed church containing a christening stone from the same period, and a pulpit supported by a wooden Joseph figure from 1450. The church's graveyard is littered with ancient stone crosses - the oldest are the so-called "sun crosses" - crosses set within a circle carved in stone. In woods at the edge of the village of KAALI , 10km northeast of Kaarma, is a murky green pool about 100m in diameter, created by the impact of a meteorite during the eighth century BC. Though not particularly spectacular, it is one of the world's few easily accessible meteorite craters, and the locals are very proud of it. Around 15km north of Kaali is ANGLA , with five much-photographed wooden windmills by the roadside. A right turn just past the windmills leads to the thirteenth-century Karja kirik , a plain white village church with an unusual crucifixion carving above its side door. Inside the church are more stone carvings, depicting religious figures and scenes from village life.
