Cloaked with pine trees and juniper bushes, and littered with glacial boulders, the island of SAAREMAA is a tranquil place with Kuressaare as its major town. It was the last part of Estonia to come under foreign control (when the Knights of the Sword captured it in 1227) and the locals have always maintained a strong-minded indifference to the influence of foreign occupiers, leading many to claim that the island is one of the most authentically Estonian parts of the country. To get to Saaremaa take the ferry from Virtsu on the mainland to Kuivastu on Muhu island. If you're travelling by car try and book a ferry ticket in advance, otherwise you may end up queuing for hours. A causeway links Muhu with Saaremaa
