Practicalities
Buses all stop in the Market Place. The tourist office , at Friary Gardens, Victoria Road (summer daily 9.30am-5.30pm; winter Mon-Sat 9.30am-4.30pm; tel 01748/850252), organizes free guided walking tours around the town in summer. Recommended accommodation includes the Old Brewery Guest House , 29 The Green (tel 01748/822460; GBP40-50), on a quiet green west of (and below) the castle. The nearby Restaurant on the Green , on the corner at 5-7 Bridge St (tel 01748/826229; GBP40-50) also has a couple of rooms available. Central Frenchgate features the seventeenth-century Willance House at no. 24 (tel 01748/824467; no credit cards; GBP40-50) and the Channel House at no. 8 (tel 01748/823844; no credit cards; GBP40-50). Slightly out of town, the excellent West End Guest House , 45 Reeth Rd, along and beyond Victoria Road (tel 01748/824783; GBP40-50), gets consistently good reports. The nearest campsite is three miles west of town on the Reeth Road at Swaleview Caravan Park (tel 01748/823106; closed Nov-Easter). For meals , the Bistro is a pleasant place with an indoor patio on Chantry Wynd (tel 01748/850792), off Finkle Street, serving filled croissants, ciabatta sandwiches, and lunches at around the GBP5 mark; it's also open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday (6-9.30pm). There are Mediterranean flavours at the Frenchgate Cafe , 29 Frenchgate (tel 01748/824949).
