The western moors are marked on their western edge by the scarp of the Hambleton Hills and the ruler-straight line of the A19 road between York, Thirsk (just outside the park) and Middlesbrough. To the east they are closed by Rye Dale, one of the region's more bucolic valleys, and the B1267 from Helmsley . Most outings are likely to centre less on the scenery - except for the walks and staggering views from Sutton Bank on the A170 - than on a cluster of historic buildings, of which the most prepossessing is Rievaulx Abbey , a couple of miles from Helmsley.
